Pālolo Valley Inspiration

Kate Kelly often visited her good friends Tutu Harvest and Kilikina, who both lived in Pālolo, a valley area less than a mile from Diamond Head on Oʻahu. In the Hawaiian language, pālolo means "clay." Tutu lived with the Kellys for a time, helping with a young John Jr. when his parents were immersed in their art.

This photo depicts the women cooking together in the hills of Pālolo. Left to right: unknown woman, Kate, Tutu and Kilikina.

John did an etching titled “Pālolo Pali,” inspired by the photo below that Kate took of this mountain.
